Season 11 brings a cool new thing called Divine Gifts. These are super special powers you can unlock. To get them, you need to beat up the season's Lesser Evils and take their Corrupted Essences to the angel Hadriel. One of the best gifts comes from Duriel, the Lord of Pain. His gifts are called Essence of Squalor and Essence of Pain. These gifts aren't just regular gear upgrades. They make the main game activity, Helltides, way more exciting and rewarding! Helltides are those scary places on the map with a red sky and tons of demons. Duriel's gifts change how Helltides work, giving you special boosts, tougher fights, and way better loot! But to use them, you need to follow some steps: prepare, summon Duriel, beat him, and then activate the gifts.
Why Duriel's Divine Gifts Are Awesome?
Duriel's Divine Gifts are different from normal gear or skills. They help you get way more rewards in Helltides and make you choose how you want to play. Each gift is specially linked to Helltides. The coolest part is they have two ways to work: Purified (safer and stronger) or Corrupted (dangerous but gives awesome stuff). They also get better as you level them up, which is a game-changer for farming Diablo 4 Season 11 gold and high-value loot in Helltide zones.
Essence of Squalor: This gift is all about helping you level up faster and stay alive longer in Helltides. Normally, it makes the little maggot enemies sometimes drop Experience Globes (those balls that give you XP). That means even weak enemies can help you level up! If you use the Purified version, you get DOUBLE the XP chance AND a super helpful bonus: your Healing Potion gets refilled every 20 seconds! This makes surviving long Helltide runs much easier. The Corrupted version is riskier: maggots fall from meteors, and when they attack you, they use up your Health Potions instead! It's tough, but you still get the main XP reward if you're brave enough.
Essence of Pain: This gift focuses on helping you find Socketables (things like Runes and Gems you put in your gear). Normally, it makes tiny versions of Duriel (called Pangs of Duriel) drop Socketables in Helltides. If you use the Purified version, you get DOUBLE the loot AND a protective shield: every 20 seconds after you get hurt, you get a temporary boost to your maximum Barrier! As you level up this gift, the Runes and Gems it drops get better and better, which is super important for making powerful gear later in the game. The Corrupted version makes things harder: Pangs of Duriel ambush you more often, and their attacks ALWAYS break your Barrier and Fortified Life! It's punishing but exciting for players who want a big challenge.

What You Need Before Summoning Duriel?
To unlock Duriel's Divine Gifts, you MUST summon him yourself and beat him! This takes special stuff and knowing how Season 11 works. The most important thing you need is 2 Baneful Hearts. These hearts are the key to opening the portal that brings Duriel to fight you. You can't just find them randomly; you have to farm for them in a specific way after Patch 1.5.0.
You get Baneful Hearts mostly by opening Tortured Gifts. These are special chests found only in Helltide zones. To open them, you need Aberrant Cinders (the special money you only get in Helltides). Patch 1.5.0 made it fairer: the chance to get a Baneful Heart from a Tortured Gift starts at 15%. Every time you open a chest and don't get one, the chance goes UP a bit until you finally get one. Then it resets back to 15%. This means you'll definitely get hearts eventually, even if you're unlucky at first! On Expert difficulty, many players get 2 Baneful Hearts within the opening 10 chests.
Because of this, farming Aberrant Cinders fast is super important! The best ways are:
Killing huge groups of enemies packed into tight "death trap" hallways (monsters come back quickly here, so you kill tons per hour).
Finishing Helltide Events (they give big piles of cinders and lots of monsters).
Beating Helltide Commanders (they drop a Baneful Heart 100% of the time!).
If a World Boss spawns inside a Helltide zone, beating it guarantees 3 Baneful Hearts! Go for it if you see one! Remember: Any Aberrant Cinders you haven't spent disappear when the Helltide ends, so open Tortured Gifts as you farm to not waste them!
You also need to prepare for the fight! Duriel uses lots of poison attacks. You'll need gear that blocks poison (Poison Resistance) or be really good at dodging, because his hits hurt a lot! Turning on Cross Network Play is a great idea because Helltide zones often have other players. Teaming up to kill Duriel's minions and then all attacking him together makes the fight much easier. Finally, make sure your character is at least Level 73. That's the minimum level needed to use the Corrupted Horn of Duriel (Duriel's Corrupted Essence) that unlocks his gifts.
How to Summon Duriel and Get Divine Gifts in D4 Season 11?
Getting Duriel's Divine Gifts is pretty straightforward, but you have to pay attention to the steps – especially one BIG rule: YOU must summon Duriel yourself to get the Corrupted Horn of Duriel. If you just join someone else's portal to fight him, you probably WON'T get the Horn!
Step 1: Farm Baneful Hearts in Helltides
Wait for a Helltide to start (look for a red zone and icon on your map) and go there.
Focus on getting Aberrant Cinders the best way for your character. If you have skills that hit lots of enemies at once (AoE), fight in those packed "death trap" hallways. If you're better at fighting single strong enemies, do Helltide Events or fight World Bosses.
While collecting cinders, look for Tortured Gifts. These chests are scattered around the Helltide zone and show up on your map. Open them one by one until you have 2 Baneful Hearts. Remember, your chances get better each time you open a chest without getting a heart! Playing on harder World Tiers (World Tier 3 or higher) gives you more Aberrant Cinders and better chances for Baneful Hearts, so try harder difficulties as you get stronger.
Step 2: Find the Pained Altar and Summon Duriel
With 2 Baneful Hearts in your bag, open your map inside the Helltide zone.
Look for the Pained Altar – it's a stone structure that acts as Duriel's portal. It moves to different spots each Helltide, but it's always inside the red zone. If you can't find it, try joining Helltide chat groups or following other players – lots of people gather near the altar!
Click on the altar and give it your 2 Baneful Hearts. This uses up the hearts and opens the portal to Duriel's arena. REMEMBER: You MUST summon him yourself to have the best chance of getting the Corrupted Horn of Duriel. If you join someone else's portal, you might fight Duriel, but you probably won't get the Horn!
Step 3: Beat Duriel (and His Minions!) Smartly
Step through the portal. First, you'll fight Duriel's minions – waves of poisonous demons. You HAVE to beat them all before Duriel shows up. Use skills that hit many enemies at once (AoE) to clear them fast. Focus on staying alive here; the minions can swarm you!
When Duriel finally appears, watch how he attacks! His poison blasts and big swings are super powerful, but he shows you where he's going to hit first, so you can dodge. If you don't have poison-blocking gear, use potions and quick moves to stay out of his poison zones. Thanks to Cross Network Play, other players will often jump in to help! Work together: distract the boss, share the damage, and all attack him hard when he's stunned (like after crowd control skills hit him).
When you defeat Duriel, he drops the Corrupted Horn of Duriel. It's a rare Corrupted Essence described as "a trophy from your battle with Duriel." This is your key to the Divine Gifts!
Step 4: Give the Essence to Hadriel and Turn On Your Gifts
After picking up the Corrupted Horn of Duriel, you'll see a message: "Hadriel’s Divine Gifts - Duriel." That means it's time to get your reward!
Open your map and use the portal to go to the Heavenly Forge, where Hadriel lives.
Talk to Hadriel. He'll say good job beating Duriel and unlock both Essence of Squalor and Essence of Pain for you to use!
To actually use the gifts, you need to understand Season 11's gift slots. Each Divine Gift has two slots: Corrupted and Purified. The Corrupted slot unlocks automatically as soon as you get the gift, letting you use the risky version right away. The Purified slot needs you to earn Divine Favor ranks on the Seasonal Reputation Board. For Duriel's gifts, you unlock the Purified slot at Divine Favor Rank II. You get ranks by doing seasonal quests, Helltides, and other main activities – it's not too hard!
To equip a gift:
1. Open your inventory.
2. Go to the Divine Gifts panel.
3. Put the gift into either the Corrupted slot or the Purified slot.
- Putting it in Corrupted keeps the main reward but adds the challenge (like maggots using your potions).
- Putting it in Purified removes the challenge, DOUBLES the reward, and adds the helpful bonus (like refilling your potion).
You can switch which slot you use anytime! If the Corrupted challenge is too hard, switch to Purified. If you want more danger and reward, switch back to Corrupted. As you play Helltides and defeat Duriel's minions while using the gift, it will level up and get even better! For example, Essence of Pain will drop better Runes and Gems as it levels.
Best Tips for Using Duriel's Divine Gifts
To make Duriel's gifts work best for you:
If you're leveling a new character, use Purified Essence of Squalor to get XP super fast and always have healing potions.
If you're hunting Socketables for your best D4 gear, use Purified Essence of Pain to get double loot and a protective Barrier.
If you're a tough player looking for a big challenge or climbing leaderboards, try the Corrupted gifts – but make sure your character can take the extra damage!
Try to unlock Divine Favor Rank II quickly! The Purified slots are much better for most players because they double rewards and add helpful bonuses without the dangerous challenges.
Keep farming Duriel! You only need one Corrupted Horn to unlock the gifts, but beating him again drops more essence. Use this extra essence to level up your gifts faster, making them give you the best possible rewards in Helltides!
